Are Websites Still Necessary in 2026?
I had this conversation with someone last week. Their question was simple: “Why do I need a website when I can just use social media as my landing page and rest?”
I get why people ask this. Instagram is free. Facebook is free. You can slap your products in a grid, add a bio link, and call it a day. So why pay for a website?
Here’s the truth. The core objective of a website is simple: to help a business achieve a goal online.
That goal could be:
- Selling products
- Getting customers
- Booking appointments
- Collecting leads
- Educating people
- Building trust
- Accepting payments
- Showcasing work
- Providing customer support
Can social media do all of this? Yes. But a website does it better.
What a website actually is
I explain a website as a piece of digital land that you own. It’s a collection of pages on the internet, tied to your own address (your domain name, like increasechisom.com), where people can find information about you or your business, see what you offer, and take action. Buy. Book. Message you. Whatever the goal is.
Having a website doesn’t mean your business no longer needs social media. It just means you understand what each one is actually for.
Picture your business as a physical shop
- Your Instagram is like renting a stall inside a busy market.
- Your Facebook page is another stall in a different market.
- Your TikTok is someone promoting your products on the street.
- Your website is your own building.
You own the building. You decide what goes inside, how it looks, when it opens, and nobody can suddenly close it on you.
That’s what a website is. Your own home on the internet.
Why “just use social media” doesn’t hold up
Social media feels convenient until you remember one thing. You don’t own it.
- You’re renting, not owning. Instagram can change its algorithm tomorrow and your reach drops overnight. They can suspend or ban your account, and it happens more than people admit. When that happens, your followers, your posts, your storefront, all gone.
- The platform isn’t working for you, it’s working for itself. Instagram doesn’t want to send people away from the app. It wants them scrolling and watching ads. A website works entirely for you and your goal, nothing else competing for that visitor’s attention.
- You can’t fully make it yours. You’re stuck with their layout, their rules, their limits. A website looks, feels, and works exactly how your brand needs it to.
- It doesn’t compound. A good page on your website can keep bringing you traffic from Google for years. A post has a lifespan of maybe 48 hours before it disappears into the timeline.
- It has a credibility ceiling. A “link in bio” page still reads as small or informal to a lot of people, especially bigger clients or serious buyers. A real website says this is a real business.
There’s also something bigger happening right now. AI tools and search engines are increasingly the first place people go to find businesses and answers, and they pull that information from actual websites, not Instagram captions. If you don’t have a website, you’re invisible in that entire layer of discovery.
So, Are Websites Still Necessary in 2026? This is the real answer
It’s not website versus social media. It’s a website and social media, each doing what it’s actually built for.
Social media gets you seen. It’s where people discover you, scroll past you, and get curious about you.
Your website is where that curiosity turns into trust, and trust turns into a customer. It’s the one thing online that’s actually yours.
